Alex Johnson is 11 years old. He has a brain injury, epilepsy and COPD caused by lack of oxygen during birth.
His mom, Dawn, says while he can only see larger objects due to visual impairment he watched April’s giraffe cam continuously. He had been in the hospital for a few days when they returned home to find April was in labor. Alex still wasn’t feeling well and was sleeping when his mom told him April was having her baby and he immediately woke up and watched.
Alex can communicate yes and no by lifting his arm and shaking his head. When he was given several choices for his wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, he said he wanted to see April and her new calf, Tajiri, in person.
Through the coordination efforts between Jordan Patch, Owner of Animal Adventure Park and the Make-A-Wish Foundation Alex’s wish came true! He and his family made the 6 hour trip from Ohio to New York. He not only met April and Tajiri, but the father Oliver as well. Jordan said it was easy, “April has had such an impact worldwide and we want to ensure that her exposure not only has an impact on animal conservation efforts, but also on any lives that she can touch in a positive way.”
According to his mom Dawn, Alex was “treated like a king” before, during and after their visit.
