Empatica, a spin off of MIT, received 501(k) FDA clearance for it’s Embrace wearable seizure detecting smart watch.
The technology has an internal gyroscope, accelerometer and thermometer connected to an electrodermal activity (EDA) sensor. An algorithm then analyzes the data and determines if the person is having a seizure. The EDA sensor determines if the person is in “fight” or “flight.”
A 135 patient trial proved positive with the device and algorithm catching most of the seizures. It is not known if they were detected before the started or during the seizure.
The cost is $249 for the device and then a monthly subscription fee of $9.90 and $44.90 a month.
